Ogden bodybuilding team hits the big time at USA competition

OGDEN ? They say they?re just normal, ordinary people, but the members of the Body Evolution Team are champions in more ways than one.

Described as having some of the best-sculpted bodies in the country, the 16-member team stole the show at the Team USA Natural Bodybuilding Championships in Las Vegas last month.

Body Evolution founders Jason and Heather Hansen were among the winners. Heather won the overall USA classic figure title; Jason won the overall USA men?s physique title. Altogether, the team won more than 32 trophies, including nine overall, qualifying the team to move on to the World Natural Olympia Competition to be held next month in Reno.

?This is big ? really big,? Jason Hansen said.

?For our little team from Ogden, Utah, to hit the national stage and walk away with these winnings and to qualify for the world is just phenomenal.

?This has never been done. It?s like Utah going to the track and field competition and having every athlete win.?

The national competition had about 150 competitors. Now the Body Evolution Team will compete against bodybuilders from more than 20 countries.

?We have good competition in Utah. There are a lot of great athletes here, and really, every member of this team is a normal, hardworking, ordinary person,? Hansen said.

?We have single mothers, firefighters, nurses, police officers, people who have overcome illnesses and weight issues.?

Body Evolution is a nutritional supplement company. Hansen said he and his wife didn?t open the company just to make money, but instead wanted to help people become healthier.

The natural body building team, named after the company, has been another way for the couple to give back to the community.

?In the world of bodybuilding, most people think of really big, huge muscles,? Hansen said. ?We are all about building those muscles naturally, and we are drug-tested.?

Natural bodybuilding means the competitors do not use performance-enhancing drugs, such as anabolic steroids, insulin, diuretics or human growth hormone.

Instead, they rely on training, diet and nutritional supplements.

?We have a different approach to health and fitness,? Hansen said. ?It really comes down to diet and supplementation, and we pride ourselves in our company.?

David Edgell, coach of the Body Evolution Team and owner of The Shop, a training center in Ogden, said all of the competitors have worked very hard to get to where they are.

?They lean on each other,? he said. ?I?ve taught them to be a resource for one another when I can?t be right there all the time, and they have really made the mark.?

Edgell said he enjoys training and teaching people principles they can apply for the rest of their lives.

?Some people train several times a week, and others just want to be able to get out of bed and walk around the neighborhood. A lot of people think being fit is for somebody else, but being fit is for everyone, and here in Ogden, we have so many resources.

?We have a system of walking trails, the mountains, the Ogden marathon. We?ve been branded as one of the best outdoor-recreation places in the country.?
