Queen of the flute | The Confidente

Polina

?Music is the language-you can communicate your deep feelings through the music-you don?t need the words, I think in ev?ery note I play is the story of my life, my experience, my tears and my laughter? says the melodious Polina Loubnina.
The Name Polina may not be known to many but the minute one mentions ?the lady with the flute?, then her image immediately comes up.
Best known for her appearance on stage with the astonishing Elemotho, Polina has made her mark in the Namib?ian music industry as one of, if not the best, flutist in the country sharing the stage with a number of bands and sym?phony orchestras.
Siberian born artist, graduated from Novosibirsk Music College with her specialties in flute. She went on to per?form with the Poteshnyi Show Theatre in Saint Petersburg before making her way to the capital city, Windhoek in 1996 where she got involved in art life of Na?mibia with the Expo 1998 ?The Curse of the Black Fish?, musical ?Hair?
?I was also acting in plays and Musi?cals but now I only concentrate on play?ing music,? she said passionately.
Polina who is a Music Theory, History and Flute lecturer at the College of the Arts, said that she is not a full time performer yet but she plans on being full time next year.
The two time Mu?sic Makers Award winner has recently won an RFI discov?ery award with El?emotho?s band.
The artist states that for her passion is a driving fuel in the music with?out disregarding experience.
?Without experience -which is your car and your driving skills-you have to maintain and work every day on improving. We say 10% is the talent,90%-is hard work,? she explains.
Polina started with music classes in Primary school, and pursued her pas?sion further with professional training in High School.
The musician says she finds her inspi?ration in music itself adding that bril?liant composers and musicians inspire her.
She describes the Namibian music in?dustry is now in the process of finding its feet.
?Namibia is a small mar?ket, so the industry should look for the ways to market out?side of Namibia, to ensure the quality of music to meet i n t e r na t i ona l standards,? Polina said adding that there are many chance takers in the industry who are mistakenly hoping to make quick money and become a star overnight.
?People must realize that to become a musician you have to study music, prac?tice day and night, train your voice, that might take years and years-in fact to be?come an expert in any field of life and especially in music you have to spend 100000 hours practicing. Real Music is not a fashion-good music is forever,? she exclaimed.
The multi-talented artist countered the practice of the NAMA awards and urged the entire current and upcoming artist as well as the stakeholders in the music industry to invest in quality mu?sic.
?We have NAMA who encourages overnight stars, giving the awards-mon?ey to the singers who cannot sing-sorry to say. So I wish in the future music in?dustry will grow into a professional in?stitution when the quality is reaching the high international standards,? she said.
